The Department of Tourism Economics and Management is a newly established department on the island of Chios, but its foundations are based on the academic legacy of the UAegean’s long-standing tradition of innovation & interdisciplinarity, and on the long-term scientific and applied experience in tourism that comes from the operation, since 1998, of the first Master’s Degree in Tourism in Greece and the operation, since 2000, of the Laboratory for Tourism Research and Studies. Especially the “Laboratory of Tourism Transport, Infrastructure, and Destination Development” (TTIDD-Lab) is a multidisciplinary laboratory encompassing fundamental and applied research in the fields of interregional transport systems, sustainable mobility, transport and tourism, air transportation, transport infrastructure, accessibility and connectivity, island mobility, sustainable development, regional development, education and training, innovative mobility services, strategy and decisions in transport, green mobility, tourists’ choices for green travel, transport economics, tourism management, and destination management. Members of the UAEGEAN team involved in the project have participated in several EU-funded and national projects related to REFOCUS, such as SPINE, GREEN-LOG, OPTIMUM, HARMONY, MaaS4EU, the National Research Infrastructure for Transport, Shipping and Logistics in Greece entitled EN.I.R.I.S.S.T. Furthermore, its members have been active participants of distinguished networks such as Air Transport Research Society, Hellenic Institute of Transportation Engineers, Technical Chamber of Greece, Hellenic Aviation Society and others. Apart from the under-graduate programme, the Department of Tourism Economics and Management organises and operates the master’s degree Program “Strategic Management of Tourist Destinations and Hospitality Enterprises” in Chios, with almost 500 graduates and 27 teachning staff members. Finally, UAegean publishes Tourismos (Online ISSN: 1792-6521), an international peer-reviewed journal tourism and also supports the Journal of Air Transport Studies (ISSN:1791-6771).

Beginning with an analysis of social needs and challenges, CESIE ETS promotes collaboration among stakeholders, bridging the gap between research and action through the utilization of formal and non-formal methodologies, always valuing diversity. The main pillars of action are: Education, Empowerment, Rights, Environment. The organizational structure is divided into thematic units and departments working in synergy and managing activities in their specific fields:

• Adult education supports individuals in acquiring and developing basic skills and key competences, developing relevant and high-quality skills and competences in order to foster employability and socio-educational and personal development, as well as participation in civic and social life
• School education promotes quality, equitable and inclusive education within schools of all levels and grades, responding to the diversity of educational needs, and valuing the potential and identities of students.
• Migration Unit is focusing on educating on differences, promoting educational paths of support, participation and orientation that respond to the needs of young people, adults, women and unaccompanied minors and that can foster greater autonomy in their life path.
• Youth fosters educational and training activities for young people with different educational, cultural and social backgrounds and youth workers, focusing on transversal skills, social inclusion, critical and creative thinking and active citizenship.
• Higher Education and Research contributes to fostering higher education and applied research in Europe and third countries, for development of innovative and knowledge society. The activities include ethics, gender issues, open data access, science education etc.
• Rights and Justice is promoting equality, diversity and non-discrimination, raising awareness on gender equality from an intersectional and non-binary approach. Specific focus is on the prevention of all types of violence, including gender-based violence, child abuse, online/offline violence, supporting victims and survivors.

CESIE ETS team is composed of 79 professionals with a wide range of qualifications, skills and profiles, united by a deep sharing of values that lead our activities, ensuring the operational capacity and the high impact of our actions. SIC operates across multiple areas, including Sustainability Innovation, Education and Capacity Building, Community Engagement, and Research and Development. The organization collaborates with academia, industry, government and civil society, aiming to integrate sustainability into every sector. SIC has successfully operated in various fields, including climate change, social inclusion, public policy, urban planning and sustainable business practices, providing innovative solutions to pressing existing or potential challenges to facilitate building of holistic community resilience. SIC primarily targets young people, including students, recent graduates, and early-career professionals, as well as entrepreneurs, academics and policy-makers. The organization focuses on empowering youth to become leaders of change in sustainability and climate action. Additionally, SIC works closely with entrepreneurs by offering mentorship programs, capacity-building workshops and collaboration opportunities. The core team at SIC consists of 5 full-time staff and over 15 volunteers, including young professionals with expertise in sustainability, project management, open innovation and social entrepreneurship. The team works in cross-functional groups, including project managers, researchers, trainers, communication specialists and community engagement experts. This setup allows the organization to be flexible, responsive and effective in its work, ensuring that each project is supported by a diverse set of skills and perspectives. SIC also collaborates with a wide network of partners, including Folkuniversitetet (VET), universities, research institutions, governments, NGOs and private sector organizations. SIC has reached over 700 learners through its training programs, workshops and youth exchange initiatives over the past 10 years. These learners come from a variety of backgrounds, including students from academic institutions, young professionals, social entrepreneurs and individuals from disadvantaged communities, including NEET youth. SIC focuses on inclusivity and equity in its programs, ensuring that individuals from diverse backgrounds have access to high-quality learning opportunities in sustainable development. Through its educational initiatives, SIC has focused on developing skills in sustainable innovation, entrepreneurship, green technologies and community engagement, all of which align with the organization’s overall mission. For last 10 years SIC has implemented 24 local and international projects focused on sustainability, youth engagement and social impact. It has also developed a diverse network of more than 100 partners across various sectors. Additionally, SIC has created multiple co-creation platforms that facilitate collaboration between users, innovators and policy-makers to generate practical solutions for pressing sustainability challenges. Mobilise mobility and logistics research group is part of the the faculty of Social Sciences and Solvay Business School. It offers education and research that is strongly internationally oriented and in disciplines as diverse as communication sciences, political science, technology, economics and business administration. The faculty has 6 departments, one of them being Business Technology & Operations of which Mobilise is a part. The mission of Mobilise is to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable and inclusive mobility system. Mobilise has 5 professors, 5 senior researchers, 15 PhD researchers, and 5 administrative and support staffs. Mobilise researchers analyse mobility to assess the external costs of transport and the impact of new policies and technologies on the transport system, the society and the environment. They also mobilise people to create awareness of the issues caused by transport, to involve them in the planning and evaluation of the transport system and to accelerate the transformation and change behaviour. Mobilise is part of the transdisciplinary research platform, House of Sustainable Transitions (HOST). When it comes to mobility, an interdisciplinary approach is instrumental in addressing urban mobility and logistics challenges. HOST builds on the synergy between transportation & logistics and other fields such as urban planning, energy, food and economy in achieving sustainability goals. It has more than 200 researchers and 44 professors from 19 different VUB research groups all united around the mission to accelerate the transition to a more sustainable society.
